2025 Jazz Award Winner: Nazir Ebo, Drums

Nazir Ebo is a premier multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, and educator from Philadelphia. A self-taught musical prodigy, Ebo’s journey began at nine years old as part of the Clef Club Youth Ensemble, under the mentorship of legendary music educator Lovett Hines. Hailing from a musical family that includes his brother, drummer Justin Faulkner, Nazir has spent the majority of his life honing his craft and shaping his distinctive sound. 

As a drummer and classically trained bassist, Ebo’s work reflects a profound technical foundation while constantly pushing the boundaries of sonic expression. His live performances have captivated audiences worldwide. In addition to his dynamic career as a performer, Nazir serves as Head of the Drum Department at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts and as an ensemble instructor with the Philadelphia Youth Jazz Orchestra, inspiring the next generation of musicians. His artistry has been recognized by WRTI as “Philadelphia’s jazz scene’s next breakthrough talent.” 

In the fall of 2025, Nazir Ebo will release his highly anticipated self-titled debut album. Rooted in influences such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, and the Sun Ra Arkestra,  the album showcases his improvisational electric quartet with guitarists Tim Watson and Simon Martinez and bassist Tone Whitfield. With compositions blending jazz, hip-hop, and experimental grooves, the album offers a bold declaration of Ebo’s artistic identity, balancing raw experimentalism with tender ballads. Ebo’s debut album marks an exciting chapter in his career, solidifying his place as a leading figure in contemporary music and an innovator dedicated to connecting and inspiring through his work.
